artery biopsy to detect the presence of GCA. If
GCA is detected, systemic steroids should be
administered immediately to prevent vision loss
in the unaffected eye.

It is not until AAION has been properly ruled
out that a definitive diagnosis of NAION can
be made. Unfortunately, there is currently no
known treatment for NAION. However, it is
advised to treat any underlying systemic risk
factors in order to decrease the risk of NAION in
the fellow eye. The optic disc edema in NAION
typically resolves in 6-11 weeks and roughly 40%
of patients will see mild improvement in vision
