CASE STUDY ON THE
RELATION BETWEEN
KERATOCONUS &
OCULAR ALLERGY
o survive in this competitive world and to carry out
day-to-day activities, one’s vision plays a vital role.
TVision is not only necessary for survival but also
important for a good lifestyle. There are many causes for
the diminution of vision. Cataract, Glaucoma, Age-Related
Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy, Trauma etc
are some of the major causes that can harm the normal
anatomy of the eye. Some of the minor causes include
Corneal and Retinal dystrophies as well as Keratoconus.
Optom. YASH R GANDHI Though Keratoconus is not that common but if present, a
OPTOMETRIST, HARI JYOT routine eye examination is necessary as there is a constant
COLLEGE OF OPTOMETRY, change in the refractive power of an eye.
NAVSARI
Keratoconus is an asymmetric, bilateral, progressive
and non-inflammatory ectasia due to gradual biochemical
instability of the cornea. Its incidence in the general
population is reported to be up to 2300 in every 2,00,000
people. As Keratoconus occurs at a young age, it often has
a significantly negative impact on the quality of life. This is
why two main mechanisms for Keratoconus development
have been proposed. One of them claims that ectasia is
induced by sliding between collagen fibrils, with no overall
tissue loss, while the other claims that it is caused by tissue
degeneration or poor tissue maintenance.
Early forms of Keratoconus normally go unnoticed
unless corneal topography or pentacam is performed.
Visual acuity loss that cannot be compensated with
spectacles is a symptom of disease progression and that is
why a study was carefully carried out where the aim was to
study the relation between Keratoconus and ocular allergy.
