SILMO PAYS TRIBUTE TO
THE LATE BERNARD MAITENAZ
Pioneer, visionary and inventor Bernard Maitenaz passed away at the age of 94 in Paris in the
last week of February 2021. He will long be remembered as the inventor of the Varilux
progressive lenses as well as the strong values he adhered to throughout his illustrious career.
The chairwoman of Silmo Paris, Amélie Morel, and the Silmo executive board were sad to
learn of the decease of Bernard Maitenaz: “an extraordinary figure whose contributions to
eye health are acclaimed by the entire profession”. They described Mr Maitenaz as lively and
open-minded, a pioneer and a visionary, always eager to share his knowledge, speak with
colleagues, and take an enthusiastic view of the future.
The whole Silmo team pays tribute to this great man who was an enthusiastic
researcher, passionate about and sincerely involved in the optical industry, and close to
Silmo. “From the launch of the first Silmo d’Or awards in 1994, he worked diligently as
a panel member, bringing his keen expertise to the ‘lenses’ category. When the Silmo
Academy was founded in 2010, he assiduously participated in the Scientific Council,
serving the vision sciences with acumen and clairvoyance.”
Bernard Maitenaz will be deeply missed by professionals across the board in the industry.
