The International Myopia Institute
was founded by the Brien Holden Vision
Institute (BHVI). It was formed following
a meeting between representatives of
the World Health Organization (WHO)
and BHVI on myopia and high myopia
in 2015. The meeting was called due to
the need to address the increasing levels
of myopia and high myopia worldwide,
a condition that can lead to potentially
sight threatening complications for an
individual, and a massive global burden
associated with lost productivity.
The IMI comprises a global group
of experts who have come together to
discuss, debate and make available the
latest evidence-based recommendations in

The IMI’s mission is to advance research,
patient management and education
in myopia to prevent future vision
impairment and blindness associated with
increasing myopia. To achieve this, IMI
brings together scientists, clinicians, policy
makers, government representatives and
educators, among others, to stimulate
collaboration and sharing of knowledge in
the field.
The Institute is supported by Zeiss,
Essilor, CooperVision, Alcon and the Vision
Impact Institute.
