DR RAJEEV PRASAD GIVING
A TALK ON MYOPIA
More than 70 speakers from different countries addressed delegates of a conference on ophthalmology and optometry in Da Nang, Vietnam, on 20 and 21 August 2022. The event entitled Cake & Pie Expo 2.0, which included an exhibition of products by companies of the industry, was organised by Mice Media at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel.
The presentations and panel discussions, which covered a wide range of subjects, also had the participation of delegates who couldn’t make it in person as it was hosted in a hybrid mode.
The sessions started with a round table discussion on ‘Combining forces to combat the most difficult eye care challenges, locally and globally’.
The panellists were Dr Li Lian Foo, head of the Myopia Centre of Singapore National Eye Care; myopia specialist and clinical assistant professor Carmen Abeseamis-Dischoso from the Philippines; and Nguyen Huygens Tran, professor at the Optometry College, Ho Chi Min City, Vietnam.
The different sessions included talks on complex cataract cases; posterior segment and beyond; ophthalmology and optometry crossover issues: myopia epidemic, dry eye and more; addressing corneal surface woes; building your eye care brand on social media for business growth; and sponsors’ sessions by Cooper Vision and OCULUS on understanding axial length: getting to the root of myopia progression.
Dr Rajeev Prasad, senior optometrist and educator from India who is also vice president, Asia Pacific Council of Optometry, was invited to deliver a talk on Myopia – a bird’s eye-view on the growing global pandemic, specialty practice of myopia control, scleral lenses and dry eye. The session, moderated by Daddi Fadel, had fellow speakers Dr Tran Dinh Minh Huyy from Vietnam, and Dr Alan Glazier, Dr Mark Eltis, and Dr Elise Brisco, all from the US.
Dr Rajeev Prasad discussed the increasing prevalence of myopia around the world in recent decades that has resulted in major health, social and economic burdens. He also talked about the growing prevalence of myopia particularly in Asian populations and how a high degree of myopia is also attached with the risk of many ocular pathologies such as glaucoma, retinal holes and tears, retinal and vitreal detachments, cataracts, myopic macular degeneration, foveoschisis (which has motivated more myopia control research), the role of genetics, peripheral hyperopia and near work and the environments impacting myopia, how precision can make a difference and how to control its progression, and the current treatment options available.
Sharing his experiences of his visit, Dr Prasad states that the Vietnamese are a wonderful people, and Hanoi, the capital of the country, is a beautiful city. During his short stay there, he gave a talk on low vision rehabilitation and enjoyed the warm hospitality of Prof Dr Pham Trong Van, head of the department of ophthalmology, Hanoi Medical University, and senior optometrist Minh Anh Trana.
Dr Prasad was also quite taken by Da Nang, a 90-minute flight from Hanoi, a popular tourist destination for its beaches and mountains, temples and the world famous ancient town of Hoi An nearby.
