Their commitment to precision and care is evident through their use of cutting-edge technology like the latest Zeiss Visufit 1000 AI machine , making them a premier destination for eyecare needs. The Indian Optician recently spoke to Amar Turakhia and Chirag Turakhia, the Directors of Turakhia Optics, who are leading the brand to new heights.
The Indian Optician (TIO): You have been in this industry for a long time now. Please share some history and background about yourselves.
Amar Turakhia (AT): Turakhia Optics, a name synonymous with excellence in eyewear, has been a cornerstone of the industry for over eight decades , our journey began in Chennai by our grandfather Mr. Himmatlal M. Turakhia.Following his legacy, our father, Mr. Anil H. Turakhia, with a vast experience spanning over 60 years, established Turakhia Optics in Mumbai. Today, Chirag and I, are proud torchbearers of Turakhia Optics, scaling new peaks and elevating the Turakhia legacy to greater heights. Commencing with a single store 26 years ago, we quickly set the standard for quality and customer service. Over the years, we’ve expanded to three retail locations, each embodying our commitment to providing a wide variety of top-brand frames and sunglasses, along with state-of-the-art eye testing clinics. Our flagship store, spanning over 2000 sq. feet, offers unparalleled collections in luxury and bespoke eyewear brands, making it a talk-of-the-town eyewear destination. Our legacy is not merely measured in years of business but in the countless customers who trust us with their vision and style.
TIO: According to you, what are the challenges currently faced by modern retailers?
Chirag Turakhia (CT): Modern retailers, especially in the eyewear sector, encounter numerous challenges, including digital transformation, evolving consumer behaviour, and heightened competition. Balancing technological advancements with personalised service is crucial. Additionally, navigating the complexities of online retail while ensuring that our product offerings reflect the latest trends without compromising on quality poses constant challenges. However, we view these challenges as opportunities to innovate and enhance our customer service. The key challenge lies in embracing new ideas and effectively implementing them. Through regular brainstorming sessions and active engagement with international markets and clients, we continually adapt our stores to modern challenges. With the right blend of product offerings, clinical expertise, and personalised services, we’ve successfully increased footfalls in this dynamic market.
TIO: The unanimous verdict is that markets have changed since COVID-19. What is your opinion on this? Where do you see the Indian eyewear and eyecare market going from here?
AT: The COVID-19 pandemic has undeniably reshaped consumer behaviour and market dynamics, including in the Indian eyewear and eyecare market. There has been a notable shift towards online shopping, increased awareness of health and hygiene, and changes in spending patterns. For Turakhia Optics, this has necessitated swift adaptation by ensuring a safe shopping environment, and offering more flexible product options. Looking ahead, we see opportunities for growth in expanding our digital footprint and continuing to offer products that cater to the evolving needs of our customers.
TIO: The spending power of customers seems to have increased with the passage of time. According to you, how is the luxury market in India now? How do you cater to customers opting for luxury eyewear?
CT: The luxury market in India, particularly for eyewear, has witnessed robust growth, reflecting increased consumer spending power. At Turakhia Optics, we cater to this demand by offering an exclusive range of luxury eyewear brands, personalised service, and a shopping experience that emphasises quality and exclusivity. As authorised retailers for several luxury brands, we have access to special and limited editions, meeting the discerning preferences of our clientele. With a significant clientele in Bollywood who frequent our store for their luxury eyewear needs, we stock unparalleled collections, ensuring that our flagship store exudes opulence and luxury in every aspect of the modern retail trade. Our understanding of luxury consumers’ preferences enables us to curate collections that meet their expectations for style, quality, and innovation.
TIO: With chain stores steadfastly increasing their footprints, what is the future for individual retail stores in our domestic market?
AT: While chain stores are expanding their presence, individual retail stores, especially those offering personalised service and expertise, continue to hold a distinct place in the market. Turakhia Optics stands out by offering unique value propositions such as our legacy, bespoke and exclusive collections, customised eyewear, and unparalleled customer service. By focusing on these strengths, individual stores like ours can continue to thrive, creating unique customer experiences that larger chains cannot replicate. Our personal presence ensures that clients not only visit our stores for their eyewear needs but also leave with a lasting relationship etched in their hearts.
TIO: Lastly, we are somewhere in the middle of this decade; where do you see your organisation growing from here?
CT: As we progress further into the decade, Turakhia Optics is poised for growth, both in terms of physical presence and online expansion. We aim to expand our retail footprint strategically while enhancing our online services to offer a seamless shopping experience. Strengthening our luxury lines by adding never-seen-before brands and limited edition pieces, innovating in customer service, and continually updating our product range to include the latest trends and technologies remain our primary focuses. Our commitment to clinical excellence drives us to modernise our stores with the latest equipment available in the industry, ensuring that we continue to uphold our legacy of quality. Our goal is not just to grow in size but to deepen the trust and loyalty we’ve built with our customers.
