The Silmo Paris international fair, the globally renowned B2B eyewear and lifestyle trade show, is recognised as the global launch pad for new designs, collections, and technologies in the eyewear industry.

A premier show for the sector, it has expanded its reach in recent years with collaborations in other countries. The latest is Silmo Singapore which has been envisaged as the Asian flagship edition of Silmo Paris.

Silmo Singapore is a joint venture between Silmo International and MP Singapore.

SPEAKERS AT THE ACADEMIC SESSIONS

These two organisations and the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) signed an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) in 2021 to officially launch Silmo Singapore in 2023, and already signed on for subsequent editions in 2024 and 2025.

The exhibition has been conceptualised to attract the top global brands and content of Silmo Paris, as well as major optics and eyewear brands from across Southeast Asia. The curated content and platforms for networking and knowledge exchange between industry leaders is in line with Silmo Paris. However, Silmo Singapore has a particular focus on regional trends and interests as well.

Silmo Singapore made its debut in April this year. With the support of STB and MP Singapore’s recognised expertise, Silmo Singapore is expected to grow into one of Asia’s leading tradeshows for the optics and eyewear industry.

MP Singapore has more than 25 years of event building, community engagement, marketing and management experience in Eastern and Western cultures, practices, and business philosophies. MP is part of Pico Group, a global group of agencies specialising in engaging people, creating experiences and activating brands for businesses, institutions and governments.

The launch of Silmo Singapore from 12 to 14 April 2023 was well received. Hosted at the Suntec City Exhibition and Convention Centre, it was spread over 6,000 square metres of exhibition space. The first edition attracted 2175 visitors, including 48 per cent from overseas. The top 5 visiting countries were China, Malaysia, Australia, Vietnam and Indonesia.

It brought together top global brands from the Paris show with major optics and eyewear companies from across Southeast Asia. Of the stalls, many were under a Chinese group banner, and there was a French pavilion as well.

Silmo Academy’s scientific symposium organised by Comexposium with programmes organised by the International Opticians Association (IOA) was an important parallel event. It attracted optical professionals, academics and trendsetters from around the world.

The conference was held alongside a series of lectures, with leading experts from around the world. These included Professor Mark Bullimore of the University of Houston, US, who outlined the latest trends in myopia management.

Dr Li Lian Foo of the Singapore National Eye Centre shared her expertise on the future of AI in monitoring myopia progression while Dr Neema Ghorbani Mojarrad from the UK’s University of Bradford discussed research on the genetic origins of myopia. Professor Weizhong Lian of Central South University, China, presented environmental strategies for myopia prevention and control.

Other eminent speakers included Dr Alicia Thompson, Michelle Beach, Dr Cindy Tromans, Dr Antonia Chitty, Dr Alicia Thompson, James Conway, Fiona Anderson, and Elaine Grisdale, all from the United Kingdom; Stephen Caunter from New Zealand; Helen Whitaker from Canada; Dr Kate Gifford and Associate Prof Alex Black from Australia.

The wide range of topics included eye-care professionals role in reducing fall risks in older people; the changing world of low vision; sports vision – improving patient performance; occupational dispensing – Eddie’s new prescription; primary care in optometry – international update and future perspectives; big data and artificial intelligence in optics; ageing well with good eyesight; and improving the quality of life for people living with dementia through patient-centred care.

“There is great synergy between the state-of-the-art, avant-garde and ground-breaking optical show which attracts professionals from around the world and Singapore,” said Elaine Grisdale, IOA director of development, adding that both are beacons of excellence. She also drew attention to “the synergy between Silmo and the IOA, the raison d’être of which is to enhance and develop the optical profession around the world”.
