Good cheer filled the air all through the four days of Silmo Paris 2021 that concluded on 27 September. The fair at Paris-Nord Villepinte was abuzz as professionals of the optical and eyewear industry took in the latest innovations and trends and conducted business with renewed energy after long months in virtual mode, to the delight of the organisers as it surpassed all expectations.
“We were uncertain we would succeed, but we were also convinced that the trade fair would have to occur to get real-life business rolling again,” says Amélie Morel, chairwoman of Silmo Paris.
Most of the 500 exhibitors were of European origin, since the usual Asian representatives (from China, Japan and Hong Kong) were prevented from travelling. Still, there was strong attendance with nearly 19,000 visitors, of which 37% were from abroad.
As always the trade fair showcased the best of innovation and creativity, expertise and knowledge, discovery and discussion, albeit in a reduced format, considering the situation worldwide. All its striking features were to be had from its five-star reception, the Silmo d’Or awards, Silmo Next, Trends by Silmo, Silmo TV, and more. Eco-design, new materials, the latest frame styles, connected products, CSR and more were at the forefront at Next, the futurology space. This marketplace of the future also examined the themes of techno-responsibility and responsible production.
Trend Forum looked at the four great trends of the months to come: Absolute Design, Neo-Stalgia
segment of the fair. Jean-Christophe Leblanc, jury president of this 2021 edition, pointed out the great diversity and extent of the applications submitted, “in terms of shapes, designs, colours, materials and expertise. We brought special attention to the creativity and novelty of the models presented. There were a lot of designs that we fell in love with, and we had a lot of discussions, but in the end, the models we selected were all natural winners.”
The winners were Rolf Spectacles for Amur 02 | plant-based eyewear (technological innovation in eyewear award); JF Rey’s Tralala 8750 in the children’s category; Metaoptics’s Metasport Shield in the sports segment; Transitions Optical’s Transitions XTRActive polarized (vision); Mei’s Easyfit Trend (material / equipment); Eschenbach Optik with their Mini Eyewear 743012_60 (optical frame brands & labels); Maison Sarah Lavoine X Ateliers Roussilhe with Thyra – MSL 04 C8 (sunglasses brands & labels); Henau’s Lunam (optical frames eyewear designer); Rigards’s Model RG2046WD (sunglasses eyewear designer); Vava Eyewear’s CL0016 (Jury’s special award); Histoire de Voir’s FIL S8 (first class prize).
Silmo is associated with the International Opticians Association (IOA) which, each year, confers an International Optician of the Year Award for vision and talent in promoting the values of the profession. Helen Whitaker, a Canadian optician, received the award from Elaine Grisdale, IOA’s director of development.
The next edition of Silmo Paris is scheduled from 23 to 26 September 2022.
contemporary vintage), Archi-tech (a sort of optical tailoring of shapes and sizes with very structured lines), and Pixel Street (glasses stimulated by technological and aesthetic innovations). Workshops and demonstrations of frame creation and shaping, demonstrations by French eyewear manufacturers, and social impact workshops were also popular draws.
The prestigious Silmo d’Or awards, which promote the best in creation and innovation, are a much-awaited
