Japanese contact lens manufacturer Menicon has announced the launch of its new holistic treatment plan for myopia control.
Menicon Bloom, which was initially introduced in the Netherlands in 2019, will now be available in seven more markets, including the UK, France, Spain, Italy, Austria, Australia and Singapore beginning this month.
Menicon Bloom features two contact lenses that are CE-approved for myopia control; an orthokeratology lens, Menicon Bloom Night, and an extended depth of focus soft daily disposable contact lens, the Menicon Bloom Day.
According to the company, the treatment plan will include lens care solutions, fitting software for eye care professionals (ECPs) and a Menicon Bloom app. “This holistic treatment plan helps slow down the progression of childhood myopia while providing all the tools for a successful myopia journey,” states the press release.
The Menicon Bloom app has been designed to support communication between the patient and their practitioner, and to enable the ECP to monitor the patient’s progress.
The launch coincides with the introduction of a new marketing campaign, ‘See their imagination bloom,’ which aims to raise awareness of childhood myopia and possible treatment options, and illustrate how the treatment plan can be incorporated into children’s daily routines.
The company underlined that the prevalence of myopia in young people has increased in recent decades to around 30% in “industrialised societies” in the West, and to “epidemic levels” of over 90% in some parts of East Asia.
B+L has introduced its new Bausch + Lomb Ultra One Day silicone hydrogel daily disposable contact lens in the UK and Ireland.
The Ultra lenses feature kaliflilcon A, a next-generation contact lens material, as per a company release. The new product also builds on the technology used in the Bausch + Lomb Ultra monthly lenses: Advanced MoistureSeal technology, which provides a wettable surface and breathability.
The latest offering from B+L also features the ComfortFeel Technology which claims to release components to promote comfort and eye health, such as moisturisers, osmoprotectants and electrolytes, to help protect, enrich and stabilise the tear film.
According to the press release, these two technologies work together to ensure comfort for 16 hours of wear, and to support a stable and healthy ocular environment. Furthermore, the lens design also aims to provide high breathability, low modulus, and UV blocking, as well as ease of handling.
Discussing the launch of the Bausch + Lomb Ultra One Day, Thomas J Appio, president of Bausch + Lomb International, said: “This breakthrough new silicone hydrogel daily disposable contact lens is a welcome addition to our already robust contact lens portfolio, and allows our eye care practitioners to take their patients and practices further.”
CooperVision Specialty EyeCare has recently introduced Optimized Pupil Optics (OPO) for its Onefit MED and Onefit MED+ scleral contact lenses to eye care practitioners (ECPs) in the United States and Canada.
As per a press release, the new high precision design option—which is supported by a user-friendly online fitting tool—enables ECPs to reposition the multifocal optics to align with the visual axis, a necessary aspect if one wants to get superior results and subjective vision.
The OPO lenses incorporate several markings, including a six o’clock dot indication to help patients orient the lens correctly on their eye, a circle of eight small dots at 6 mm to indicate the new centre of the optics for pupil centration, plus toric hash marks notating the flat meridian as seen in other Onefit MED toric haptic designs.
“The shape of a patient’s sclera—paired with the tension of their eyelids—can often cause scleral lenses to decenter down and out. This moves the optics out of ideal alignment and impacts their quality of vision, including creating higher-order aberrations for multifocal wearers,” said Justine Siergey, OD, FSLS, Manager of Professional Affairs – Irregular Cornea at CooperVision Specialty EyeCare. “With the new Optimized Pupil Optics’ design option, practitioners are able to dramatically improve the patient’s visual outcomes and their satisfaction.”
CooperVision Specialty EyeCare’s Procornea DreamLite night lenses have been successful in slowing the progress of myopia. These orthokeratology contact lenses have recently received European approval for the same by acquiring the CE mark.
The contact lenses can be used for myopia control in children who have a refraction of -0.75D to -5.00D and a cylindrical refraction with a maximum of -2.50D.
According to CooperVision, the DreamLite night lenses are currently available in Europe, the Middle East and China, and are considered to be the leading design under the EyeDream brand, in the UK.
Dr Juan Carlos Aragón, president, CooperVision Specialty EyeCare, reveals that the increasing frequency and prevalence of myopia is one of the most discussed issues in eye health. He further explains that the World Council of Optometry too has advised optometrists to incorporate a standard of care for myopia management into practice.
“The latest CE Mark will help eye care professionals to communicate with even more confidence about DreamLite lenses’ ability to slow the progression of myopia,” says Dr Aragón.
CooperVision also said that in a two-year study, the DreamLite night lenses showed reduced axial length growth by 63% among high myopes, compared to the single vision spectacle lens control group, a total reduction of 0.32mm.
